Ferguson (26-10) is set to make his return to the octagon in a welterweight clash against Michael Chiesa at UFC Abu Dhabi this Saturday. The former interim lightweight champion, who last prevailed over the now-retired Donald Cerrone at UFC 238 in 2019, is currently on a seven-fight losing streak. The 40-year-old was notably on a 12-fight winning streak, having triumphed over the likes of Rafael dos Anjos, Kevin Lee, and Anthony Pettis.

In his last octagon outing, Ferguson squared off against Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296, losing the fight via unanimous decision. Meanwhile, Chiesa (18-7) is currently on a three-fight losing streak. The 36-year-old last won against Neil Magny via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Island 8. He is coming off a submission loss against Kevin Holland at UFC 291 last year.

Michael Chiesa previews Tony Ferguson fight at UFC Abu Dhabi

Michael Chiesa believes that, considering how each fighter's career has unfolded recently, his welterweight clash against Tony Ferguson at UFC Abu Dhabi is a suitable one.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Chiesa stated that the Ferguson fight makes sense because both of them have been on losing streaks lately.

"There are definitely people sending me messages like, 'Take it easy on him, please let him win.' I'm like, you've got to remember dude, at the end of the day this is still Tony Ferguson. He is not fighting a guy, that is in his 20s on a win streak. He is fighting a guy that's 36 and is 0-3 in his last three fights. It's not like they threw him to the wolves. It's a fight that honestly makes sense."
