Dricus Du Plessis pulls off come-from-behind win over Israel Adesanya at UFC 305
In an even more impressive showing of super-human ability, Dricus Du Plessis pulled himself from the jaws of defeat to submit Israel Adesanya. At UFC 305 last weekend, the South African undisputed champ defended his belt against the Nigerian-born former divisional kingpin.
The bout had some bad blood between the fighters as Du Plessis seemingly questioned Adesanya's African heritage, being a born-and-raised South African himself. It was quite the back-and-forth affair where both fighters shined in their respective styles.
The champion surprised many as he held his own on the feet early, despite the clear technical advantage his challenger had over him. His brawling, blitzing kind of striking may not look the most technically clean, but he's accurate and overwhelming.
Still, Adesanya's sniper-like precision won him the opening round, appearing to have sapped the champion's energy. In the second round, Dricus Du Plessis came back by using his grappling to put 'The Last Stylebender' on the defensive.
In the razor-close third round, Adesanya appeared to have slightly edged out the champion by increasing his output and putting the champ on the defensive. In the fourth, the champion was looking like he ran out of energy and was merely surviving - until he wasn't.
Connecting with solid shots to Adesanya's head, Du Plessis thread the eye of the needle and found a way to take his opponent down and sink in the fight-ending rear-naked choke.
