Floyd Mayweather has been often criticized for extending his career with post-retirement exhibition bouts but few have been more harsh on him than Oscar De La Hoya. As former rivals turned business competitors, De La Hoya and Mayweather have hardly seen eye-to-eye.

After Mayweather's recent exhibition rematch with John Gotti III, De La Hoya ripped into the 47-year-old for continuing to put on "embarrassing" performances. The Golden Boy Promotions owner expressed his thoughts in an Instagram video as a part of his "clap-back Thursday" segment.

De La Hoya said:

"[Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III] was so embarrassing. Floyd, you're 50 years old, you're a legend in the sport. I've stood up for you in countless interviews including Shannon Sharpe's podcast last week. But you have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions. I know life is hard and life is expensive but come on dude, put your legacy first."

Fans were split in the comments, with half of the reactions agreeing that Mayweather's exhibitions are exhausting their fandom while others felt that De La Hoya had no right to speak on the subject.

One fan came in support of Mayweather and commented:

"He makes 30 million each exhibition fight, doesn't look embarrassing to me."

Other fans commented:

"Look who is talking"
"It's so obvious that Floyd is a bum"
"Oscar saying this after some of the stuff he's done recently is wild"

Did Floyd Mayweather fight Oscar De La Hoya?

While Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya are now rival promoters, their bad blood began in the ring as two of the most skilled boxers of their respective era.

Their simultaneous success and continuous feud led to a WBC light middleweight title fight in May 2007. Mayweather won the bout by split decision, handing 'The Golden Boy' the fifth loss of his career and ending his final reign as a world champion.

Since their respective retirements, both decided to stay in the sport and transition to becoming promoters. The Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions remain two of the most prominent companies in boxing in 2024.
