Michael Chandler currently occupies the No.7 spot in the UFC lightweight division's top 15, much to the frustration of surging contender Grant Dawson. Since entering the promotion Chandler has accumulated a record of 2-4. But his exciting fighting style, combined with the elite opponents he has faced, has seen him remain inside the division's top 10.
'Iron' has earned five performance bonuses in his six-fight stretch inside the octagon, most recently securing a Fight of the Night award following his rematch with Charles Oliveira at UFC 309.
But Dawson, who holds a 10-1-1 record in the UFC, has grown frustrated with Chandler's ranking. 'KGD' is set to face Diego Ferreira at UFC 311 on Jan. 18, and ahead of the bout he was interviewed by Inside Fighting, where he said:
"There are people who do not belong in the top 15 let alone the top 10. If you like at somebody like Michael Chandler, he's 2-4 in the UFC. You put his record up against my record, 11-1 in the UFC, assuming I beat Diego. 11-1 in the UFC compared to 2-4 in the UFC, and you say, 'Yeah, the 11-1 guy [is] not ranked. The 2-4 guy ranked in the top 10, top 7.' It doesn't make any sense."

Dawson added:
"You've got these guys, they're not looking to fight the up-and-comers. They need to take Michael Chandler out of there."

Michael Chandler could get cut from the UFC with one more loss, believes former opponent
Michael Chandler has been one of the most exciting post-COVID additions to the UFC, making his debut against Dan Hooker at UFC 257 in 2021. But having gone 1-4 since his KO win over 'The Hangman', a former opponent of Chandler's believes he may be cut should he lose his next bout.
Eddie Alvarez has faced off against 'Iron' on two occasions, both for the Bellator MMA lightweight title, and the pair hold one victory each. During a recent interview with MMAJunkie, 'The Underground King' shared his thoughts on the Missouri native's fighting future, saying:
"If you ask [Chandler], he’s underperformed. He’ll know the reason for that or whatever the reasons are, but for sure I think he has all the tools to win the UFC title. It’s a matter of whether he uses the tools he has, and I don’t think he has properly... Let’s let him fight again, and if he’s on the same trajectory and he loses again, he can maybe get cut."
