In episode #2254 of The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) podcast, Hollywood actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson discussed how self-help books helped him quit smoking.

Gibson revealed that he had been a smoker for nearly 45 years. However, after his doctor diagnosed him with first-stage emphysema, he read a book by Allen Carr that was given to him by his son. He immediately stopped smoking after that.

The 69-year-old revealed that the book had a silly title but worked like hypnosis, helping him overcome his smoking addiction. Gibson said:

“I smoked for 45 years and I couldn't stop. I read this silly book by Allen Carr. He wrote this book, and it was the only thing that made me stop. It worked like crazy. The book was called The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, and it had a silly title. My son gave it to me. I used to walk past the bookshelf and think, Dumb book, dumb title, but then finally, my doctor said I had first-stage emphysema.

"So, I read it and I stopped. It was, I think, like neurolinguistic programming or something like that— you read it and kind of self-hypnotize yourself. But it worked.”

Joe Rogan's guest claims Ibogaine reduces drug addiction

W. Bryan Hubbard, the first chairman of the Kentucky Opioid Commission, discussed the benefits of the plant-based drug Ibogaine in controlling drug addiction in episode #2251 of the JRE.

Hubbard asserted that Ibogaine has the ability to reduce drug addiction by restoring the brain's dopamine and serotonin levels to their pre-exposure state. He said:

"Ibogaine has the unique ability to restore the brain's dopamine and serotonin production to its pre-opioid exposure levels within 36 to 48 hours. Thereby fully resolving physiological opioid dependence with a single administration for 80% of individuals the first time. That number goes to 97% with a second supportive dose."
