In episode #2252 of The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan delved into European colonizers' catastrophic impact on Mayan and Aztec civilizations, notably by introducing devastating diseases.
Joined by Wesley Huff, Rogan expressed amazement at the sophistication of these ancient societies and the tragic collapse they suffered.
Rogan recounted historical accounts from priests who had visited the Aztec markets and marveled at the sophisticated culture before the diseases swept through, wiping out the population.
He pointed out how entire civilizations, like the Aztecs and Mayans, were thriving before Europeans arrived with deadly pathogens that contributed to their downfall:

"When you think about how many people existed back then, and then Europeans came and everybody dies. Everybody dies of disease. And it's like how many people died like millions millions of people died here millions of people died there."
He added:
"Like holy sh*t and you go through... Like the accounts these priests had of visiting these Aztec markets and how incredible they were these people from Rome who'd come to visit the Mayans. This is unbelievable, or the Aztecs rather, like this is unbelievable how sophisticated they are. And then [diseases came in and] gone, everybody's dead."
The conversation also touched on current discoveries in the Amazon rainforest, where lidar technology has revealed evidence of ancient, man-made agricultural landscapes, suggesting that much of the region was once densely populated.
