Cain Velasquez spent eight months in jail from February 28 before being released on November 8 on a $1 million bail.

The Mexican-American fighter from Salinas, California, was hit with multiple charges, including one count of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of assault with a firearm.

The former UFC heavyweight champion was involved in an incident that took place in Santa Clara County, California. An armed Velasquez was alleged to have chased down Harry Goularte for 11 miles before opening fire at the alleged child abuser.

Goularte had his stepfather and mother with him at the time of the incident. The shot fired by Velasquez missed Goularte but hit his stepfather, who sustained non-fatal injuries.

Per a report by ESPN, Velasquez will have to wear a GPS tracker and not come within 300 yards of Goularte and his family, according to Velasquez's attorney Mark Geragos.

In June, the former UFC heavyweight champion, on behalf of his four-year-old son, filed a civil lawsuit against Harry Goularte, accusing him of sexually molesting Velasquez's son. Gourlarte is expected to appear in court for a pre-trial on November 14.

Cain Velasquez: One of the UFC's greatest heavyweights

Cain Velasquez is regarded as one of the best heavyweights in UFC history. The Mexican-American fighter is part of the American Kickboxing Academy, home to former UFC champions like Daniel Cormier, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Luke Rockhold. It also houses newly minted lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

Velasquez made his UFC debut in his third professional MMA fight. He faced Brad Morris at UFC 83, where he finished Morris in the first round.

He won the UFC heavyweight championship in 2010 at UFC 121 by finishing Brock Lesner in the first round. He lost the title and won it back from Junior dos Santos in a memorable trilogy fight. He made two successful title defenses before losing the title to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 188.

Cain Velasquez followed up his loss to Werdum with a first-round knockout of Travis Brown at UFC 200. However, he was sidelined for three years due to injury and made an unsuccessful return to the octagon when he faced Francis Ngannou at UFC on ESPN 1 in 2019. He lost the bout to Ngannou via first-round TKO.

Had it not been for long layoffs due to injuries, Cain Velasquez would perhaps have had a longer run in the UFC as a dominant heavyweight. Maybe he would have even won the title for a third time. Velasquez retired from MMA on October 11, 2019.

Cain Velasquez ventured into professional wrestling in 2019, first competing in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide and then joining the WWE. He made his WWE debut on Smackdown on October 4, 2019. However, Velasquez was let go by WWE in 2020 due to budget cuts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
