Gilbert Burns is coming off a unanimous decision loss against Belal Muhammad at UFC 288. Burns was a massive favorite heading into the contest but suffered a shoulder injury in the first round. Muhammad masterfully worked around this weakness and walked away with a unanimous decision win.
Gilbert Burns thinks he is the perfect first opponent for Dustin Poirier if he moves up in weight
Gilbert Burns likes to stay busy and does not take much time off between fights. However, he is currently recovering from the shoulder injury and does not have a fight booked for the coming months. An early 2023 return is likely as he is observing developments in the welterweight division up close.
Former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier is one of the biggest names in the UFC right now. Talks of his move up to welterweight have picked up steam in recent times and the prospect of welcoming ‘The Diamond’ to the division excites many fighters.
While speaking to MMA Fighting about his return, Gilbert Burns said:
“If you ask me which fight I wanted, it’s Dustin Poirier. He’s moving up and that would be a super cool fight. But everyone’s calling him out, everybody wants him. So I won’t talk too much about it. But it’s a cool fight because of his name, because he’s moving up. It makes sense for him to fight against a top-five welterweight.”
Burns vs Poirier would be guaranteed fireworks. It will be interesting to see how things play out in the months to come.
