The HBO hit House of the Dragon has certainly captured the emotions of a large chunk of the viewing public, with the exception of Danielle Kelly. The submission grappling star is more on the indifferent side when it comes to HBO’s newest series, which recently aired its season finale this past weekend.
In an interview with The MMA Super-Fan, Danielle Kelly said that she felt the show’s progression and build-up were a bit slower compared to Game of Thrones, a series which HBO released in 2011 and lasted eight seasons:
“I don’t hate it. It’s just kind of like, you know I felt the show was kinda slow. Unlike Game of Thrones, I feel like the buildup was more exciting than House of the Dragon’s. So, I don’t know. I feel that one character is kinda like carrying the show.”

House of the Dragon is a prequel to the Game of Thrones series and is based on the middle part of George R.R. Martin’s other novel Fire and Blood which details the peak of House Targaryen’s rule in Westeros.
While Game of Thrones focuses more on the tribulations of Houses Stark and Lannister, House of the Dragon revolves around House Targaryen and Princess Rhaenyra's troubles with the crown.
The show’s timeline is approximately 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, one of the main characters in Game of Thrones and the last Targaryen to stake a claim on the Iron Throne.
Danielle Kelly feels HOTD will have a similar end to GOT
Game of Thrones was one of the most influential television shows of the 2010s and the show’s eight seasons certainly had a grip on that decade’s zeitgeist.
The series had a huge following, but that same fanbase was split in half after the show’s final season. Danielle Kelly is aware of what happened in Season 8 and she’s afraid that House of the Dragon will have a similar finish to that of Game of Thrones.
The first seven seasons slowly built up what should have been a grand battle between Jon Snow and the Night King, but that build was gone to waste when fans were thrown a curveball in the final big war.
There was also the wasted character progression that Jaime Lannister went through throughout the series, a predicament that Danielle Kelly abhorred:
“I’m also probably being too biased because I’m focused on Game of Thrones. I’m kinda mad that the way they made the last season was kinda stupid, so now I just feel like the House of the Dragon is gonna be like the same thing. But I don’t know, I’m still on episode 4 right now."
