Ahead of his world championship matchup, Gabriel has been talking about his personal life in an interview with ONE Championship. Peeling back the curtain on his upbringing, Gabriel said:

“I was very messy at school. And I didn't like studying very much ([aughs]. I became a little popular in high school because I already competed, and in school, I played soccer with the guys. So. everyone knew me. I have never been bullied. And despite being a messy kid, I always respected everyone and never bullied anyone. And I didn't like to see other kids being bullied. I was the guy who protected some kids so they wouldn't get bullied.”

“I really admire his style” - Matheus Gabriel is excited that his ONE Championship debut is against Kade Ruotolo

At ONE on Prime Video 5, Matheus Gabriel will face Kade Ruotolo for the ONE lightweight submission grappling world championship.

With two of the grappling scene's most exciting rising stars taking center stage at ONE on Prime Video 5, Gabriel has said that he won’t let his admiration for Ruotolo stop him from becoming champion.

In Ruotolo’s first title defence, he will face Matheus Gabriel, who has built a record of 48-10 in BJJ matches. Whilst Ruotolo has taken all the headlines in 2022, Gabriel has serious pedigree as an IBJJF world champion.

The 19-year-old Ruotolo has had a star-making year after becoming the youngest world champion in ADCC history and becoming a ONE world champion.

In an interview with ONE Championship, his Brazilian challenger had this to say as we get closer and closer to December 2:

“My expectation in my debut in ONE against Kade Ruotolo is very high. I am very happy and looking forward to making this debut. I'm very happy with the opportunity to fight for the belt. Kade is a guy who has a very aggressive game, who fights forward all the time. I like this game, it's a style I like, always fighting forward. I really admire his style.”
