Mikey Musumeci has been very clear that his move up to the bantamweight division last time out was a necessity rather than a preference. The ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion has been totally dominant at his weight class.

His last defeat came to Gabriel Sousa three years ago but since that point, 'Darth Rigatoni' has made it very clear that it wasn't him getting in the way of a rematch.

After getting revenge over his former foe with a dominant display at ONE 167, Musumeci spoke about how Sousa has continued to taunt him without being willing to compete at flyweight once again.

To finally make the contest happen, the flyweight champion made the switch to bantamweight but he has no long-term plans for competing at this weight.

He spoke on The MMA Hour about how bantamweight was a one-and-done move for him:

"I don't have any beef in this weight class. I don't even want to be in this weight class. I don't care. But I just went up to fight him, and now I'm out. Now let's go up more."

Mikey Musumeci isn't moving back down yet

As he said in the interview, the next challenge actually sees Mikey Musumeci continue to move up the weight classes rather than returning back to flyweight.

That's because once again, the contest that is set to take place requires him to leave his natural division.

Rather than being motivated by revenge like in his bantamweight clash with Sousa, his lightweight debut against the champion Kade Ruotolo is about putting on a dream contest for the fans.

Both titleholders in ONE Championship will meet in a big moment for the sport at ONE 168 on Sept. 6 in Denver.
