‘The General’ Jonathan Haggerty has been a staple of ONE Championship’s flyweight Muay Thai division for several years. At ONE on Prime Video 4, Haggerty will take on a new challenge and a new set of contenders as he moves up to the bantamweight division.

After winning two in a row inside the circle, Haggerty’s change of weight class came as a surprise to many. His two losses to the current world champion at flyweight, Rodtang, may have played a part despite both fights being certified classics.

Haggerty has also had issues making weight, with his two most recent bouts scrapped at the last minute due to medical issues.

On his return to competition, ‘The General’ will take on Russia’s Vladimir Kuzmin. In an interview with The MMA Superfan, Haggerty gave his thoughts on the bantamweight division and why it offers an exciting new challenge:

“I feel like the flyweight division was a lot more technical, a lot harder. Now stepping up to bantamweight, I feel that they’re a lot stronger. I’m excited. There’s a few matchups that I’d love to do. I think I can hold my own in each of the top five contenders. So I’m intrigued and I’m excited, mainly.”

Leaving the flyweight division as the No.3-ranked contender, Haggerty will be looking to announce himself at bantamweight on November 18. In doing so, he'll hope to push himself towards the world championship, currently held by Nong-O Gaiyanghadao.

Jonathan Haggerty wants to impress US audiences in next fight

Jonathan Haggerty has had to wait to get his chance to return to the circle and put on a show for the fans. ‘The General’ was scheduled to compete at ONE on Prime Video 1 but was forced to pull out of the fight due to illness.

Last competing in February, Haggerty was originally lined-up to compete in the ONE flyweight Muay Thai world Grand Prix. However, he also had to pull out of that fight due to illness.

After several setbacks, Jonathan Haggerty will finally return at ONE on Prime Video 4 as he makes his debut in a new weight class, moving up from flyweight to bantamweight.

Speaking to SCMP MMA before his scheduled fight for ONE on Prime Video 1, Haggerty expressed his excitement to get back inside the circle and put on a performance for the US fans watching:

“Everything’s going well. Everything’s going to plan. I’m excited, I really am. Everything’s just fit into place now. It’s a lot better than the last fight camp, so I’m happy with the progression. I’m excited to put on a performance for the US fans for the first time. I’m going to show off some special moves.”
