Nico Carrillo is ready to step into the biggest match of his career.

The Scottish knockout machine has the opportunity at ONE Championship gold when he challenges Superlek Kiatmoo9 for the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title at ONE 170 on January 24, 2025, at Impact Arena.

Carrillo is on the best run of his career with ONE Championship, holding a perfect 4-0 record in the promotion, but he hasn't forgotten the work he did when he was still coming up in the European regional scene.

Taking to Instagram, Carrillo reflected on his long journey from trying to make a name for himself in Europe to challenging for gold on the world's biggest stage for martial arts.

Nico Carrillo wrote:

"Five years ago I fought for my 1st major title, the European title. Five years ago I would've dreamed of being in the position I am in today, fighting for the @onechampionship world title, fighting the pound pound-for-pound king in Superlek. I knew I would get here, but when you actually get there it’s truly a gratifying feeling. I only got here through a relentless work ethic and mindset to be as far from mediocre as possible."

He added:

"Count your blessings and when times get tough, as my late friend Jordan said, look at where you started and look where you are now. I shall receive my flowers soon 💐 🤴"

Carrillo earned his shot at Superlek's ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title after racking up four straight knockouts against Furkan Karabag, Muangthai PK Saenchai, Thai legend Nong-O Hama, and Saemapetch Fairtex.

Nico Carrillo not underestimating Superlek heading into world title matchup at ONE 170

Nico Carrillo is smart enough not to underestimate any opponent, especially if it's Superlek Kiatmoo9.

The Thai superstar holds the ONE flyweight kickboxing and bantamweight Muay Thai world titles and is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound strikers on the planet.

In an interview with the Leather'd Podcast, Carrillo said it would be foolish for him to underestimate and downplay Superlek at ONE 170.

"I already practiced this mindset of when I have it that it won't be like that once I have it. I'll be more hardworking, and I'll be more determined, and so on and so on. So I already look into the future and know that."
