“I've been eating more” - Jonathan Haggerty trades fish for steak in preparation for bantamweight debut

Ahead of his long-awaited return to the circle, Jonathan Haggerty has seen some changes to his fight preparations. At ONE on Prime Video 4, ‘The General’ will make his debut in the bantamweight division.

The former flyweight champion will take on Russia’s Vladimir Kuzmin, with the entire event being free to watch for North American audiences with a Prime subscription.

After having to pull out of the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix due to an undisclosed illness, Haggerty decided to move up a weight class. Whilst this provides him with a whole new set of challengers to take on, it also allows him more freedom in training camp without such a strict weight cut.

In an interview with ONE Championship, ‘The General’ spoke about the little changes that have improved his quality of life in the build-up to this fight:

“Training camp has been the same really, but obviously I've been adding some more strength and conditioning. And the main thing is I've been eating more. You know, I've been eating steak at night. I can't believe I'm eating steak at eight o'clock at night. Normally, it would just be like fish, but I haven't touched one bit of fish! Normally that was my go-to for 61kg, like loads of fish, you know. And now it's just chicken noodle. I'm excited.”

Jonathan Haggerty will make his bantamweight Muay Thai debut on November 18, live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“I still think there's unfinished business” - Jonathan Haggerty could alternate between flyweight and bantamweight

Since his ONE Championship debut in 2019, Jonathan Haggerty has shown himself to be one of the best flyweight Muay Thai fighters on the planet. In his next fight, ‘The General’ will tread new ground as he moves up a weight class to the bantamweight division.

Despite how much he has enjoyed this fresh challenge and the extra freedom he is allowed in training camp with competing at a higher weight, Haggerty still sees a return to flyweight as an option.

In an interview with ONE Championship, he said:

“I feel that I left flyweight on top. I still think there's unfinished business, who knows, I might go from flyweight to bantamweight and keep going up and down. I'm not too sure yet. I'm going to see how the bantamweight division goes for me first. I’m just going to take it step by step.”

Before thinking about competing at two weight classes, Jonathan Haggerty needs to make an impact at bantamweight when he debuts against Kuzmin, who is 1-1 inside the circle.

Whilst the former ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion will always have his former division in his rear window, a win on November 18 would announce himself to the other bantamweights, including the division's Muay Thai king, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao.
