Sean O'Malley made headlines during a fan meet-and-greet event in Japan when an unusual request from the event’s MC, Joy, took center stage. The MC asked O’Malley to kick him from behind, and the former bantamweight champion obliged, sparking a whirlwind of reactions on social media.

After the event, Joy shared his excitement on Instagram:

“Had the pleasure of MCing the Sean O'Malley fan meeting event yesterday! He was so witty and cool and sweet 😭😭I never dreamed I'd be able to talk to O'Malley, who I watched in action in the UFC, and I'm truly honored. Even though he's a superstar, he's so gentle and polite to each and every fan, I thought that his personality won the hearts of many people 😭. Thank you so much for coming to Japan!”

Sean O'Malley reflects on social media detox and path to recovery ahead of 2025 return

Sean O’Malley has embarked on a social media detox as he prepares for his anticipated return to the octagon in 2025. The 30-year-old revealed on his Timbo Sugarshow podcast that he’s already feeling the benefits of disconnecting from online distractions.

O’Malley, who lost his title to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 in Sept. 2024, cited a torn labrum in his hip as a factor in his performance. Following surgery, he announced earlier this month that he would step away from social media, with his team managing his accounts until his next fight, potentially in the first quarter of 2025.

During the podcast, O’Malley shared that the detox has allowed him to focus on personal growth:

"I said I was going to start in 2025, but I just kind of ... It feels good. It's been probably, like, two, three days. But I already feel just less -- or more disconnected from the internet universe, the universe internet. Because I'd be working out, I'd check my Snapchat, post some Snapchat, check ... Dude, it's like, even just three days or whatever it's been, I already feel like."

He further added:

"The original reason I feel -- I don't even know how to articulate this yet. But I feel like my higher self is trying to tell me something. I'm trying to learn something, but I'm too distracted with and out of touch with reality to grasp what's trying to be taught from my higher self. I just feel like the only way to do that is just to disconnect from distractions. And, dude, social media is the biggest distraction right now for me."
