Islam Makhachev has faced and defeated some of the best the lightweight division has to offer. However, the lightweight champion recently revealed his dream UFC fight, and fight fans had a lot of say about it.
Makhachev's choice for his dream matchup is a fight that eluded his friend and Khabib Nurmagomedov multiple times during his career. Yes, we are talking about Tony Ferguson, who was once thought to be the 'The Eagle's' Kryptonite.
Regrettably, despite the fight being booked multiple times, it never came to fruition due to injuries on both sides among other complications. 'El Cucuy' was riding a 12-fight win streak when the final attempt to make the fight was foiled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ferguson's career has gone downhill since then. The once-feared bogeyman of the lightweight division is now on an eight-fight losing streak, with many believing it's time for 'El Cucuy' to hang up his gloves for good.

Makhachev however, wishes he could've fought Ferguson in his prime and had even offered to step in for Nurmagomedov to face 'El Cucuy' when 'The Eagle' was injured.
During a recent interview with popular streamer Adin Ross, the UFC pound-for-pound king said:
"My brother Khabib was supposed to fight Tony Ferguson five times. They both had injuries [and] the fight was canceled five times. My dream is to fight this guy at that moment. Tony at that moment [was] a very good athlete."

Islam Makhachev stands to eclipse Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 311
Islam Makhachev is set to defend his title against Arman Tsarukyan later this month at UFC 311. The Dagestani stands to make lightweight history if he defeats Tsarukyan at the pay-per-view.
For context, currently, Makhachev along with Khabib Nurmagomedov, B.J Penn, and Benson Henderson, holds the record for the most title defenses (three) at 155-pounds.
If the reigning lightweight champion beats 'Ahalkalakets' in their upcoming fight, he'll become the first champion in UFC history to defend the lightweight title four times.
