Islam Makhachev has hit back at Colby Covington's accusations, where the welterweight contender branded him and Khabib Nurmagomedov as “weight bullies.”
Covington had previously criticized Makhachev and Nurmagomedov, allegedly claiming they were “squeezing chromosomes” during weight cuts and were significantly larger than fellow lightweights.
Speaking on Match TV, Makhachev didn’t hold back, defending himself and his mentor. According to the interviewer, Covington said back in 2023:
“Khabib and Islam were squeezing chromosomes out of their bodies during their weight cut. These guys are huge lightweights. They are bigger than me, even though I fight in a higher weight class.”

The reigning UFC lightweight champion responded:
“First, let’s describe who Colby is. A man who can’t prove anything with his fights, but tries to be well known with his mouth. This is what he does. He doesn’t talk about fighters who are not in the Top 15. He talks about fighters who have already achieved a lot to be well-known. I think he’s one of the masters of trash talk.”
When asked if Covington’s comments affected him, Makhachev’s response was clear:
“No. Why should it bother me? It would be understandable if it were someone [who is a good fighter]. But when a person can’t fight normally, but still talks about me, it doesn’t bother me.”

Islam Makhachev is willing to fight Ilia Topuria "if necessary"
Islam Makhachev has expressed a keen interest in facing Ilia Topuria in a potential super-fight. Topuria, the reigning featherweight champion, most recently defended his title in October, becoming the first fighter to knock out Max Holloway. Meanwhile, Makhachev, the lightweight champion, successfully defended his belt in June, submitting Dustin Poirier. Makhachev has been sidelined due to a hand injury, but he is reportedly set to headline UFC 311.
In the aforementioned interview with Match TV, Makhachev revealed his willingness to face Topuria, saying in Russian:
"[Topuria] is a champion, he has to talk. We'll definitely have some conversations with him. He talks about me all the time. He probably wants to get something across to me. Let's go out and talk. We'll fight if necessary."
