Islam Makhachev left fans in stitches as he recounted a mishap involving his teammate Umar Nurmagomedov during a media session ahead of their UFC championship fights on Jan. 18 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. While Makhachev prepares to defend his lightweight title against Arman Tsarukyan in the main event of the card, Nurmagomedov is set to challenge Merab Dvalishvili for the bantamweight crown in the co-main event.
At the media day in Los Angeles, Makhachev recalled an incident from their training camp in San Jose. The reigning lightweight champion said:
"I have one story. One time we were training in San Jose. Some of the guys say, 'Let's go to San Francisco.' I tell them, 'Hey, I don't want to go to San Francsico … traffic, more than one hour by drive at the weekend. They just leave. Four people. I call them after two hours. 'Hey, you guys, have you reached San Francsisco?' They say, 'No …' What happened? They say, 'We go to the gas station and Umar put diesel in our car."

Islam Makhachev dismissed Arman Tsarukyan's "Secret Move" ahead of UFC 311
Islam Makhachev has dismissed Arman Tsarukyan's claims of having a "secret move" ahead of their upcoming UFC 311 bout. During media day, Tsarukyan hinted at a surprise technique but refused to reveal what it was, presumably in the hopes that it will catch Makhachev off guard come fight night. In response, Makhachev reminded everyone not to believe Tsarukyan’s promises:
''I told you, don't believe what Arman says because last time he said he will finish [Charles] Oliveira by one round but they go all distance and he won by split distance, that's why don't believe him.''
