Back in October 2015 at UFC 192: Cormier vs. Gustafsson, many MMA fans would have expected Islam Makhachev to continue his winning ways against Adriano Martins. The Brazilian was 27-7 in professional MMA at the time and managed to pull off an outstanding upset, finishing Makhachev in the very first round.
The Brazilian was doing well in the UFC and took his organizational record to four wins and one loss after beating the Russian fighter. However, since getting the better of the Russian, Adriano Martins has failed to win a single professional MMA outing.
Martins would only fight two more times in the UFC, losing to Leonardo Santos and Kajan Johnson in back-to-back bouts. After these losses, the 39-year-old was cut from the organization.

Adriano Martins has since suffered three more defeats outside of the UFC. The Brazilian has lost to Alexander Shabliy, Kaynan Kruschewsky and most recently Carlos Silva. At Shooto Brasil 90, Martins' bout against Adriano Rodrigues ended in a no-contest due to an eye poke.
All but one of Martins' losses after beating Makhachev have come via decision, with only Kajan Johnson knocking-out the Brazilian at UFC 215: Nunes vs. Shevchenko 2 in his final UFC outing.
How has Islam Makhachev recovered from his only professional MMA defeat?
Since suffering his first setback in professional MMA, Islam Makhachev has remained unbeaten and now fights Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight belt at UFC 280 this weekend.
The Russian has fought ten times in the promotion and has won six of these outings via stoppage. Only Chris Wade, Nik Lentz, Arman Tsarukyan and Davi Ramos managed to go the distance against the Dagestani fighter.
