Martins countered one of Makahchev's punches with a straight right to floor the Russian. Speaking about the loss in a recent interview with UFC Russia, the lightweight champion said:
"I had my own plans with him. Even though my coaches said to clinch and wrestle with him first [and] then begin to work. I planned to attack the entire 15 minutes... He's older than me. That also means he's more experienced and he countered one of my punches... I learned my mistake, I rushed in with the hit. My confidence got in the way in that fight. I thought I'd just keep charging and I'll be unstoppable, but everything can end with just one punch."

It looks like lightweight legend Khabib Nurmagomedov has big plans in store for his protégé Islam Makahchev.
During the 31-year-old's post-fight interview at UFC 280, Nurmagomedov called for a fight between the newly crowned champion and the pound-for-pound king Alexander Volkanovski.
The lightweight legend stated that Islam Makhachev was clearly the pound-for-pound best fighter in the UFC:
"Last couple of years I told you guys Islam Makhachev is the best fighter not [just] in lightweight, he is a pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter right now, today... You know what's interesting? Now is our plan, fly all the way to Australia and fight in pound-for-pound king's backyard, with Volkanovski. Lets do it. We know we are going to finish this guy."
