Islam Makhachev hinting at a potential matchup with Justin Gaethje has sparked a debate among MMA fans worldwide. Many expressed their displeasure with Makhachev for avoiding top contenders, while some backed the reigning champion.
Makhachev stated in a recent interview with Ushatayka that he hopes to return to the octagon in July and is open to facing Gaethje should the former BMF champion defeat Dan Hooker at UFC 313.
''I like this idea because I haven't fought Justin yet... I've already fought [Oliveira and Arman], and preparing for the same opponent is not such a big motivation. But if Gaethje shows himself well in the next fight, we can meet.'' [H/t: The Sportster]

One fan asked Makhachev to fight Ilia Topuria, writing:
''Better go smesh Topuria..''
Another felt that Makhachev should face either Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan, writing:
''I’d eventually like to see that matchup, but think it needs to be Charles or Arman, no questions asked.''
Other fans wrote:
''Oh, so he will not defend his belt against the no. 1 contender again? Is that the pound 4 pound king, picking and choosing his opponents? Never defended his belt against the no. 1 contender in his division and continues to refuse to do so. Embarrassing.''
''Lol at ppl crying without watching the whole interview. He’s willing to fight whoever but would prefer Gaethje (if he beats hooker) because it’s a fresh match up. IFW is end of June/early July & then he’ll fight again toward the end of the year. 3 title fights for Islam is a year is a great strength of schedule''

In the aforementioned interview with Ushatayka, Makhachev reiterated his desire to become a two-division champion by hinting at a move to 185 pounds and a fight with Dricus du Plessis, saying:
''My height allows it, I think my physical data allows it too…I’m not saying that I can 100% finish Du Plessis. But watching his fights, watching his style, I think I have the keys to victory.”
