Jackie Buntan has been an absolute force of nature since arriving in ONE Championship's women's strawweight Muay Thai ranks in 2021. While many have helped her along the way, she credited her mastery of the basics of striking for her success.
In an interview with The Casuals posted on YouTube, the inaugural ONE women's strawweight kickboxing world champion explained:
"Your basics are your foundations. We do so much basics in fighters class. For this fight, I drilled the jab and defending the jab cross for two months. That's truly what it is. I think when I fight, it's all my basics. But then once you're able to kind of get that honed in, then you can have your little flair mixed in and have that technicality with footwork, speed, all that, different looks, head movement."

The fight that the Filipino-American star referenced was her matchup against legendary French-Algerian kickboxer Anissa Meksen last Nov. 8 at ONE 169 over 26 pounds of women's strawweight kickboxing gold.
Despite 'C18' having the advantage of experience on her side, Buntan's masterful use of her improved boxing abilities, coupled with some timely leg kicks, gave her the victory and the crown via unanimous decision.
Jackie Buntan takes great pride in winning her first ONE world championship
Dominating Anissa Meksen the way that Jackie Buntan did to claim her first ONE world championship is a moment that she will cherish forever.
Speaking recently with Combat Sports Today, the 27-year-old Boxing Works representative said:
"It's such a proud moment, and I feel so blessed to be able to do that. You know, being Filipino, being a female, also, when I was younger, there weren't many female [fighters] to look up to in America and the Philippines."
