Back in July, Dustin Poirier took to X to express his desire for one more fight. Now, an MMA page on the social media platform has revitalized talk of Poirier's retirement fight by posing a thought-provoking question for fans. In short, who should Poirier face in his final UFC bout?
Poirier himself contemplated an immediate retirement after failing to dethrone Islam Makhachev as lightweight champion at UFC 302. It was 'The Diamond's' third crack at undisputed gold, but it ended with another submission loss for him. While he considered walking away from fighting then and there, he didn't.
Instead, Poirier rediscovered his competitive fire, issuing the following tweet:
"The Last Dance. Let em know"

Now, reports have emerged that the former interim lightweight champion will have his requested retirement fight in 2025. The reports stem from Poirier himself. In response, the Home of Fight X page fielded a question to MMA fans regarding who Poirier should face from a selection of three opponents.
Among them are the reigning featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who recently expressed an interest in moving up to lightweight, former featherweight champion and current 'BMF' titleholder Max Holloway, and former fellow interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje.
One fan suggested either Topuria, who Poirier has never faced, or Gaethje, with whom he is 1-1.
"Topuria or Gaethje. He already beat Max twice at 2 different weight classes it makes no sense for him to do that one again."
Others, though, were in favor of a trilogy between him and Holloway, who is making a permanent move to lightweight.
"I'd love to see him fight Holloway again"
This was echoed by another fan.
"Max"
Some, however, named Conor McGregor as the ideal opponent, despite the Irishman not being listed.
"It's obviously Conor"
A collage of fan reactions can be seen below:
Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor have fought thrice
Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor are more than familiar with each other. 'The Diamond' faced the Irishman during the latter's legendary conquest of the UFC featherweight division at UFC 176, suffering a first-round TKO loss.
However, they met years later at lightweight and as completely different fighters at UFC 257 in 2021. Fortunately for Poirier, his evolution had surpassed McGregor's and he TKO'd him after two rounds.

The pair then had a rubber match at UFC 264 overshadowed by extreme trash talk from McGregor, who Poirier got the better of again before the Irishman snapped his shin, leading to a doctor stoppage in the first round.
