John McCarthy recently expressed his thoughts on a potential addition to the UFC broadcast team and offered himself for the new position. McCarthy noted that it might benefit both the promotion and MMA fans worldwide.

McCarthy is currently working for the PFL as an on-air rules analyst. The veteran shared his happiness in working from home in a recent interview with MMA Junkie, but seemed unsure of his contract status, stating:

“I gotta be honest, the PFL set me up with a thing at my house, and it was great...I didn’t have to fly home or any of that, so it was awesome. If it continues on, great. If it doesn’t, no hard feelings, it’s all good.”

The UFC can use an on-air rules analyst who can barely explain to the viewers what's occurring inside the octagon, such as the stoppages, the fouls, and so on, McCarthy added, even though veteran commentator Din Thomas serves as a coach-analyst for the UFC PPV events.

The veteran referee also mentioned that sometimes the UFC commentators don't know what's going on inside the cage, therefore he'd be happy to take on the role if the promotion wants, saying:

“Oh, absolutely. I don’t know if the UFC would want me, but yeah, I could do it with the UFC. And I’m being honest, I think it’s something the UFC needs. They have too many times that their commentators are unsure about what is going on or what should be done, and that’s not their fault...So, they have Din Thomas kind of off to the side as the coach. I do think they need, and I’m not saying it’s me, but they need somebody there to absolutely clear things up for the fans when they are in a situation when the time has been stopped, a foul has occurred, or something like that.'' John McCarthy previews a potential fight between Colby Covington and Gilbert Burns

Colby Covington suffered a devastating third-round TKO loss against Joaquin Buckley at UFC Tampa earlier this month. Despite his loss, Covington went on to call out Gilbert Burns.

That didn't sit well with UFC referee John McCarthy, who shared his candid opinion on Covington in an episode of the WEIGHING IN podcast.

''He’s [Covington] gotten worse. I’m just going to be as honest as I can. He’s slowed down. He’s not as fast. His entries for takedowns aren’t as deep, and he doesn’t get where he used to get. All of those things are going to work against him, especially if he fights someone like Gilbert Burns… If he fights Gilbert… Does he want to take Gilbert down? It’s not an easy position to be… On the feet, Gilbert has more power. I think he’s got the speed.''
