Jai Opetaia vs. David Nyika: Aussie boxing star once vacated his IBF cruiserweight title for major payday

Back in 2023, Australia's Jai Opetaia made waves by vacating his IBF cruiserweight championship and instead pursuing a major payday by competing at the 'Day of Reckoning' Riyadh Season fight card in Saudi Arabia that December. The IBF wanted Opetaia to face Mairis Briedis, who was the then-IBF cruiserweight mandatory challenger, in a rematch.

Well, with Briedis recovering from an injury, Opetaia vacated his IBF title and instead faced and knocked out Ellis Zorro at the 'Day of Reckoning' event. Opetaia later fought and outpointed Briedis in a rematch and claimed the vacant IBF belt in May 2024. He most recently knocked out Jack Massey in October 2024. Per FOX Sports, Opetaia was expected to bag a $680k purse for the Zorro matchup.

Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) defends his IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight belts against New Zealand's David Nyika (10-0, 9 KOs) next. Their clash headlines a boxing card at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Center in Gold Coast, Australia, on Jan. 8, 2025.
