Jarred Brooks has been promoted to a BJJ brown belt.
There aren’t many fighters who have had a better year than Brooks. ‘The Monkey God’ fought three times in 2022, with the first two being wins against top strawweight contenders Hiroba Minowa and Bokang Masunyane. The 29-year-old then captured his first world title by beating Joshua Pacio in December.
Brooks is ending the calendar year by becoming a brown belt in jiu-jitsu. The ONE strawweight world champion posted the special moment on Instagram with the caption:
“What a way to end the year! I was surprised by @detroitjiujitsuacademy last night and was awarded my brown belt! Thank you Anthony Fawaz and Danny agemy for making a home at djj for me , always having my back and looking out for me and hundreds of other team members….”

‘The Monkey God’ fulfilled a lifelong dream at ONE 164. He always had the potential to become a world champion but didn't reach his full potential until signing with ONE.
Despite convincingly taking out the long-reigning champion, Brooks thinks there is a lot of room for improvement.

Jarred Brooks believes his performance against Joshua Pacio was a 5/10
Joshua Pacio held the ONE strawweight title for 1331 days before Jarred Brooks showed up. Although ‘The Passion’ had his moments, Brooks did a phenomenal job of shutting down his opponent.
During an interview with ONE, ‘The Monkey God’ was asked to rate his performance. He responded by saying:
“I'd say a five. To be honest, I think that I have a lot to work on. And you know, a lot to express. I've been working on a lot of things. It's just that I didn't express them the way that I [knew I could] and I know that I could have better performance. I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy, there's a lot I can do to nullify performances and think that I am quicker."
Brooks is living his best life heading into 2023. Once the strawweight king returns, he will likely defend his title against Pacio in an instant rematch.
‘The Monkey God’ currently holds wins over three of the five ranked strawweights. It'll be interesting to see how long the 29-year-old reigns supreme.
