Joe Rogan recently had political commentator and filmmaker Matt Walch over in his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience. As expected, the renowned MMA commentator and comedian went deep with Walsh on current societal issues - most interestingly the issues of racism in America and across the world.

In a compelling exchange, Rogan and Walsh speculated on what could racism have stemmed from. Walsh observed that systemic racism in America went on a resurgence during Barack Obama's presidential run. He speculates that this may have been a response to Obama being the first black US president.

In response, Rogan said:

"I think it's because it's just like a religious ideology. Like when the Taliban started blowing up those ancient statues of Buddhas, do you remember that? They destroyed things that were a part of human history that we would have studied for thousands of years. And they destroyed them because they didn't go along with their religious ideology."

Rogan continued

"I think part of the 'woke' thing is this religious ideology that HAS to be followed. And you cannot stray from the lines, stay inside whatever this ideology is promoting and telling you what to do. And one of the things was that you had to take down all these statues of terrible people."

Rogan went on to mention Donald Trump saying that "woke" people would eventually take down statues of George Washington, which was, at the time, a "ridiculous" thing to say. And yet, people eventually took down statues of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, for the reason that they owned slaves as well.

Matt Walsh and Joe Rogan talk more on the history of racism

Digging deeper into the topic, Joe Rogan Experience guest Matt Walsh had an interesting perspective on the history of racism and slavery. The political commentator compared our views of racism as being astronomically different from people hundreds of years ago.

Walsh said (16:27):

"Everybody who lived on earth prior to about a hundred years ago is racist by our standards today...If you go back 200 years, or earlier than that almost everybody either owned slaves of was okay with slavery as an institution. You go back 500 years, and there was nobody on the planet who considered slavery to be wrong fundamentally. It took like thousands of years for it to ever even occur to a single human on earth that slavery is fundamentally wrong"

Walsh went on to lament the fact that, while what he just said is an interesting subject that we should study, we couldn't do so as the "woke" community is set to categorize racism and slavery as a white, western phenomenon.
