Joe Rogan recently had former Texas governor Rick Perry and Kentucky Opioid Commission chairman W. Bryan Hubbard over in his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience. The two guests spoke heavily about the health benefits of Ibogaine, a known psychoactive alkaloid.

First observed as a ritualistic plant called "iboga" in West Africa in the late 1800s, Ibogaine slowly rose to popularity as a psychedelic agent that can bring forth neural regenerative and psychotherapeutic effects. Despite this, it's still banned in most countries. Both Perry and Hubbard passionately advocate Ibogaine as a treatment for psychological ailments such as drug addiction and PTSD, among others.

Hubbard, in particular, saw the rather spiritual aspect of the drug, citing it as something "divine." He said:

"We [my wife and I] received Ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT as well in order to understand how each operation effectuates the safe delivery of this medication. And what I can personally attest, for me and for her - collectively and together - Ibogaine paired with 5-MeO-DMT has been the most profound spiritual experience either of us have ever encountered."

He continued:

"I am 100% persuaded that these substances are divine medications that are engineered from on high so that we can heal what we do to ourselves what we do to each other and be affirmed by the love of our Creator which is eternal and almighty."

Rick Perry, W. Bryan Hubbard, and Joe Rogan discuss Ibogaine therapy for war veterans

Since their advocacy heavily leans on the positive psychological effects of Ibogaine to its users, Rick Perry and W. Bryan Hubbard cited US war veterans are the key beneficiaries once the treatment becomes more widespread.

Veterans, while celebrated for their bravery and sacrifice, almost always have a profoundly difficult time adjusting back to society after years in combat. Some, unfortunately, never fully re-adjust to society and suffer depression and even suicide ideation. This has been well-documented in countless forms of media - from books, films, music, etc.

Perry said (via Joe Rogan Experience):

"I mean there's a host of countries around the world allow for Ibogaine to be used for you know clinical trials and for medical purposes. Yet [pauses] we're sitting here [pauses again] with 20 plus veterans a day killing themselves. Yet we have a compound that clearly the data clearly shows that this compound [when] appropriately used and appropriately overseen can absolutely change lives and save lives. And for me to be able to know that and then still see government say, 'no we're not interested', is really frustrating."
