Jonathan Haggerty recently opened up about his struggles to make the flyweight limit. Those struggles played a role in his withdrawal from his last two bouts, including a spot in the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix tournament that got underway at ONE 157 in May.

In an interview with ONE Championship, ‘The General’ spoke honestly about his issues making weight, largely blaming himself for ignoring the advice of the nutritionist tasked with helping him safely cut weight:

“I took on a new nutritionist and I wasn't really listening to what I was being told. But then it got to the last bit and I sort of went back to my old self; cutting down on the food, big time. I was literally halving the portions that the nutritionist was giving me just because in my head, I was thinking that if I eat less, I'm going to lose more weight. Obviously, that isn't how it goes, and I realized that now. Everything's a learning curve. And I'll be back stronger.”

Seeing the error in his ways, Jonathan Haggerty will return this Friday night at ONE on Prime Video 4, debuting in the bantamweight division against Russian striker Vladimir Kuzmin. Fans can watch the event live and for free through the Amazon Prime Video streaming service with an active subscription.

Jonathan Haggerty is not intimidated by facing a bigger opponent

Former ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion Jonathan Haggerty is not easily intimidated. Stepping into the Circle for the first time as a bantamweight, ‘The General’ will almost certainly come in at a size disadvantage but believes he can make up the difference with his incredible fight IQ. Speaking to The MMA Super Fan, Haggerty said:

“I feel like I’ve fought better people although I’m smaller as a flyweight. My fight IQ is a lot better. Like I said, I’ve been fighting for 17 years. There’s not one fighter that can faze me or scare me apart from the heavyweights.”

Since debuting for ONE in 2019, Jonathan Haggerty has squared off with a slew of current and former world champions including Joseph Lasiri, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, and ‘The Iron Man’ Rodtang Jitmuangnon on two separate occasions.

Competing against some of the most dangerous fighters in the world of Muay Thai, it’s highly unlikely that ‘The General’ will be fazed by his Russian challenger.
