Jonathan Haggerty explains why traditional Muay Thai edges out Dutch-style kickboxing: “It’s a game-changer”

When it comes to traditional Muay Thai vs. Dutch-style kickboxing, Jonathan Haggerty prefers the latter.

During a recent appearance on the Winners Talking podcast, the reigning ONE bantamweight kickboxing world champion broke down the difference between the two different styles of combat sports and which one he personally prefers. Haggerty said:

"Depends if the Thai’s got heart. The Dutch come forward and just kick-punch-kick-punch and do what they do and the Thai boxer’s got no heart, it could be a long night. But if the Thai boxer can — are you allowed to throw elbows? Then the Thais for sure, slipping the elbow in. It’s a game-changer".
"I think the Dutch cover up like this [puts hands up close to his face] a lot, and you can’t do that with elbows. Even the slightest elbow could just cut you and that’s it. It doesn’t even have to be hard. That’s why I say sometimes, you find an elbow to cut someone and you find an elbow to knock someone out. Those are the two types."

Jonathan Haggerty puts his ONE bantamweight kickboxing title on the line against Wei Rui at ONE 171

On Thursday, Feb. 20, Jonathan Haggerty will return to the Circle to put his ONE bantamweight kickboxing crown on the line against the division's top-ranked contender, Wei Rui.

Haggerty vs. Wei will headline a loaded night of fights when ONE Championship heads back to Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar for ONE 171.

It will be Haggerty's first time defending his kickboxing title since scoring a stunning second-round knockout of Fabricio Andrade to win the belt in November 2023.

Since then, 'The General' has suffered his first loss as a bantamweight, going down in less than a minute against 'The Kicking Machine' Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE 168: Denver.

As for Wei Rui, the Chinese star scored his spot at the top of the rankings with a unanimous decision victory over former ONE world champion Hiroki Akimoto at ONE Fight Night 22 in May.

ONE 171 will emanate from the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar on Thursday, Feb. 20. Early bird tickets are now available via ONE Championship’s official website.
