Jorge Masvidal has been angling for a title shot against Leon Edwards following the latter's UFC 278 victory over Kamaru Usman. The No.11-ranked welterweight has been very vocal about the potential matchup, milking his 2019 backstage altercation at UFC: London with the welterweight champ.

Despite the altercation, Masvidal and Edwards have not met in the octagon. With Edwards now the champion, he recently responded to a Masvidal callout saying that 'Street Jesus' would have to beg for him to even consider giving him a title shot. Masvidal responded via Twitter:

"I’ve never gotten on my knees and begged anyone for anything. If your lifestyle is to get on your knees... that’s on you, I’m not judging. Accept the fight, get this payday, get your rematch and get your face broken at the same time. It’s a no brainer dummy. #itoldyou"

Despite Masvidal's callout, a trilogy fight against Usman remains the most likely matchup for Edwards. Masvidal has been winless since 2019, losing his last three fights, two of which were title fights against Usman. Edwards recently acknowledged that despite his desire to fight Masvidal, his recent losing streak has made it a tough fight for the UFC to make.

Jorge Masvidal believes fans want to see him face Leon Edwards

Leon Edwards recently shared that Jorge Masvidal's recent skid has made a potential title fight between the two almost impossible at this juncture. Masvidal disagreed, adding that he believes everyone wants to see him face the welterweight champion.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Masvidal stated:

"If people think I deserve it or not, awesome. I don't take nothing to heart. I definitely feel I deserve it. Just from the money side, we definitely deserve it. Just from the fans side, we definitely deserve it. Who doesn't want to see me fight Leon?"

Masvidal added:

"They might say I don't deserve it, but they would still raise their hands in the dark and quiet and be like, 'I want to see that fight and I'm actually going to pay my hard earned money to go see that fight.'"

Masvidal is certainly a draw and a welterweight title fight against Edwards would attract plenty of attention. Currently ranked outside of the division's top ten, Masvidal will likely have to get back in the win column before he receives another crack at the 170lbs title.
