Khabib was proud of his cousin brother Usman Nurmagomedov's performance as he successfully defended his Bellator lightweight championship in a thrilling majority decision victory over Ireland’s Paul Hughes at PFL Dubai.
While many expected Nurmagomedov to dominate the clash, Hughes put on a gritty performance that tested the undefeated champion's mettle. Nurmagomedov displayed his well-rounded game, but Hughes’ defense and striking proficiency kept the fight competitive.
The fight also featured accidental groin strikes, a point deduction for Nurmagomedov, and a head clash that left Hughes bleeding. In the final round, Nurmagomedov used grappling control and leg kicks as the judges scored the fight 47-47, 48-46, 48-46 in his favor. Despite the loss, Hughes proved himself as a world-class competitor and earned the respect of the Dagestani team.
Former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib, took to Instagram to react to his cousin's win, writing:

"Congratulations Brother @usman_nurmagomedov on another successful title defense, you have done a good job on the big stage over the past couple of years, and of course a great job in the gym during your life. You still have a lot to show the world of mixed martial arts and you are only accelerating and you are still continuing to learn and get stronger with every fight. Keep working harder, the further you go, the more difficult your opponents will be."

Following the fight, Nurmagomedov admitted to underestimating Hughes. Despite being heavily favored, Nurmagomedov struggled against Hughes’ takedown defense and body shots. The 26-year-old acknowledged the toll the fight took, stating it elevated his level as a fighter. He commended Hughes's toughness and wrestling takedown defense in his post-fight speech. Nurmagomedov admitted that he didn’t expect his rival to be "this strong," calling it a significant "mistake" on his part.
With this third successful title defense, Nurmagomedov improved his record to 19-0 (1 NC) in professional MMA.
