Khamzat Chimaev recently discussed possibly moving up to light heavyweight for a clash against Alex Pereira. The two have gone back and forth in the past, but 'Borz' appears to fancy his chances against the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion due to their respective skill sets.
'Poatan' has seen a surge in popularity in the past year, agreeing to defend his title on short notice and providing the UFC with a suitable headliner whenever called upon. He has continued to deliver incredible performances, finishing all three of his opponents this year. Chimaev, on the other hand, is unbeaten and could be closing in on a title shot at either welterweight or middleweight depending on what the promotion has planned.
While speaking to Michael Bisping ahead of his middleweight clash against Robert Whittaker at UFC 308, 'Borz' answered whether he would consider moving to 205-pounds to challenge 'Poatan'. Chimaev gave props to what Pereira has accomplished and mentioned that he would be interested because of the stylistic matchup:
"Of course, I've been always open for that [fight against Pereira]. I know that stylistically, this match for me [is] much easier than other guys. But in striking, I'm honest, I know the guy can knock me out...The guy is [a] good striker, one of the best guys with hardest punches. But I'm one of the best grappler, best wrestler, he's not that." Khamzat Chimaev shows respect to Alex Pereira post Khalil Rountree win
Although they have had their fair share of back-and-forth exchanges and taken jibes at each other including Khamzat Chimaev requesting Dana White grant him a title shot so he could finish the Brazilian, 'Borz' does respect Alex Pereira for what he has accomplished. His aforementioned comments prove that he isn't ignorant to 'Poatan's striking and reaffirmed that he would see an opportunity with his elite grappling.
Most recently after Pereira's fourth-round TKO win over Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307, Chimaev took to X congratulating 'Poatan':
"@AlexPereiraUFC Congratulation only respect [salute emoji]"
