Since the promotion chose to schedule Strickland vs. du Plessis as the main event of UFC 312 in Australia next year, Chimaev will have to wait a little longer to contend for the title. In his most recent octagon appearance at UFC 308, 'Borz' displayed a dominant performance against former champion Robert Whittaker, winning by submission in the first round.
Chimaev accomplished this with a rear-naked choke, forcing Whittaker to tap due to the tightness of the grip. As a result, 'The Reaper' sustained a jaw injury.
Dricus du Plessis discusses not facing Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 312
Many MMA fans anticipated Khamzat Chimaev would challenge Dricus du Plessis next for the middleweight title after Chimaev's impressive victory against Robert Whittaker at UFC 308.
Instead, the promotion scheduled Sean Strickland to face du Plessis at UFC 312 in Feb. 2025. The reigning champion offered his explanation for why Chimaev wasn't booked against him in a recent interview with Mainevent.
''It was on the table, for sure. We talked about it but it wasn't from my side, or, from his side where the fight didn't happen. I think there were some issues with the UFC and Khamzat. I'm not sure. And the timing, I think the timing also played a big role. But there were conversations and I said that's the fight I want. Let's do it and they couldn't make it happen. So, Strickland is the fight they did."
