After taking an extended break from competition, Adesanya is set to challenge newly crowned champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC 305 on Aug. 17. The recently released UFC 305 Countdown - Du Plessis vs. Adesanya showed footage of the Nigerian-Kiwi fighter's emotional interaction after the loss.
After overcoming his emotions, Adesanya reassured his family and team:
"We'll get him again. It's a good story for [Sean Strickland]. I'm proud of him. I'm going to get to him. We'll get it back, okay? I promise."

Looking at the defeat in hindsight, Adesanya said:
"I hate losing. Don't get me f* wrong, I hate losing! I just felt like I let my people down. I wanted to show them something special. I felt like I let them down, that was the hardest thing for me. But again, these are the things in hindsight. Because you have to do the analysis and be honest with yourself and things.You need to change."

Israel Adesanya was one of the most active champions and it was speculated that constant activity would eventually catch up with him. Following the UFC 293 defeat against Sean Strickland, the 35-year-old announced that he would be taking an extended break from competition.
The timeline for his return was uncertain until the UFC 305 showdown against Dricus du Plessis was announced. During the event's on-sale press conference, Adesanya shed light on how he utilized the time off from competition:
"We've shuffled the deck at the gym. We've kept what was useful and discarded what wasn't. Added a lot of tools to my game. I look forward to getting in there and showing off what I can do."
