With only hours separating him from his first shot at 26 pounds of gold, Nico Carrillo was content to keep his comments to a minimum and allow his fists to do the talking come fight night.
"I’ve got no message to Nabil," Carrillo told Nick Atkin of the Bangkok Post. "Just to everybody watching - tune in. I’m going to be the first-ever Scottish athlete to win ONE Championship gold."
Nico Carrillo smashed through two Thai legends on his way to a ONE world title opportunity
Nico Carrillo goes into ONE 170 with 27 career wins to his credit, four of those coming under the ONE Championship banner. However, it was his last two appearances on martial arts' biggest global stage that separated him from the pack and earned him a shot at a ONE world title.
In December 2023, 'King of the North' faced his toughest test to date, squaring off with former ONE bantamweight Muay Thai king Nong-O Hama.
After practically being reduced to a one-legged fighter after eating a slew of Nong-O's devastating leg kicks in the opening round, Carrillo turned the tables in the second stanza and scored one of the most incredible come-from-behind KOs in ONE history.
Seven months later, he followed that iconic performance with a beautiful second-round finish against Thai legend Saemapetch Fairtex at ONE Fight Night 23, setting the stage for his big opportunity at ONE 170.
Will Carrillo etch his name into the ONE Championship history books this Friday and become Scotland's first ONE world titleholder, or will Nabil Anane play spoiler and send 'King of the North' tumbling back down the rankings?
