Kosei Tanaka vs. Jonathan Rodriguez has been scrapped from Top Rank's Japanese boxing card tomorrow. The matchup was initially set as the feature fight of the event, with Tanaka expected to defend his WBO super flyweight belt against the Mexican contender.
Unfortunately, Rodriguez was well above the 115-pound limit for super flyweight, weighing in at 121.25 pounds, compared to Tanaka, who stepped on the scale at 114.8 pounds. As a result, Rodriguez lost his crack at the super flyweight title, while Tanaka was taken off the card.
Without a short-notice replacement for him to face tomorrow, Tanaka's WBO super flyweight title defense will have to wait. To the misfortune of fans, weight misses are part of combat sports, having received tremendous amounts of attention in recent months due to Ryan Garcia's mishap against Devin Haney.

The Mexican-American superstar weighed in at 143.2 pounds for his then WBC super lightweight championship bout with Haney, which rendered him ineligible to compete as he was 3.2 pounds over the divisional limit. However, Garcia drew little controversy for his conduct.
In fact, fans found it humorous that he dismissed the art of making weight, stating that he won't deplete himself. He went on to defeat Haney via majority decision, rocking him badly, before a positive drug test for ostarine led to his one-year suspension and the result being overturned to a no-contest.
Fortunately, no such scandal rocked the Tanaka vs. Rodriguez bout. It remains to be seen whether Top Rank and the WBO will look to reschedule the matchup for a later date.
Kosei Tanaka vs. Jonathan Rodriguez isn't the only recent boxing match to be canceled due to a weight miss
Kosei Tanaka vs. Jonathan Rodriguez is just the latest boxing match to be canceled due to a weight-related issue. However, it appears to be a predicament plaguing WBO title fights, as Tanaka was scheduled to defend his WBO super flyweight belt, while a similar occurrence happened last weekend.
Janibek Alimkhanuly vs. Andrei Mikhailovich was to be contested for the former's IBF and WBO middleweight belts. Unfortunately, Alimkhanuly underwent a difficult weight cut that led to his hospitalization, leading to the bout's cancellation.
