"Let's get on with it" - Jonathan Haggerty reveals he lied about his age at the start of his Muay Thai career

Jonathan Haggerty has been competing at the elite level for such a long time that it's easy to forget that he's still young in his career. The British striker debuted in ONE Championship back in 2019, where he quickly found himself fighting the very best in the world.

In just his second fight with the promotion, he defeated Muay Thai and kickboxing icon Sam-A Gaiyanghadao to win the ONE flyweight Muay Thai world championship. Haggerty has said previously that one of the biggest obstacles he faces in his career is the experience difference between him and many of his opponents.

However, that's not to say that he started late, he just hasn't had the same amount of fights as his rivals. In fact, Jonathan Haggerty recently revealed that in order to compete at the earliest time possible, there were some restrictions that they had to circumnavigate.

The Brit spoke on the Winners Talking Podcast about how he started fighting before he was 18 years old:

"Yeah, I had to lie about my age a few times just to get a professional fight then. They just threw me in, and I was like let's get on with it."

Jonathan Haggerty has evolved in front of our eyes

After arriving in the promotion five years ago, ONE Championship fans have watched Jonathan Haggerty evolve into the striker that he is today.

This journey has come with some setbacks but each and every time, he's able to get back on the right path to continue moving forward.

Haggerty will look to do the same in his return to action at ONE 171: Qatar where he will put the ONE bantamweight kickboxing world championship on the line for the first time.

In the main event on Feb. 20 at the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar, he will face China's 'Demon Blade' Wei Rui.
