Liam Harrison says fellow Englishman Ricky Hatton was "way out of his depth" against Floyd Mayweather

Liam Harrison feels that famed British boxer Ricky Hatton was overmatched when he stepped into the squared circle with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.

In December 2007, Hatton entered the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for the biggest fight of his boxing career. Squaring off against Mayweather for the WBC and The Ring welterweight championships, Hatton had the support of a raucous live audience and over 60 million Brits back home. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as Hatton suffered a 10th-round TKO.

Looking back on the fight, Liam Harrison recognizes that Ricky Hatton had very little chance of upsetting Floyd Mayweather. He told The MMA Superfan:

“Yeah, that fight was about 15 years ago now I think... We were all rooting for Hatton on that night but he was just way out of his depth.”

Liam Harrison had his own chance to share the ring with Floyd Mayweather last month, but a much-needed knee injury forced ‘The Hitman’ to decline the opportunity. Once fully recovered, Harrison hopes the two parties can resume talks and put together an exhibition bout.

Liam Harrison is eager to resume sparring

Still rehabilitating from a devastating knee injury, Liam Harrison has been limited in what he can do in the gym in recent months. ‘The Hitman’ has kept up with his striking by partaking in stationary boxing, but the one-time ONE world title challenger is eager to get back to moving around and sparring in the gym. Taking to Instagram, Harrison said:

"I miss sparring so badly… might not look it but all these boys in the vid are the best of friends… how can you express love to your best friends other than punching them in the face and kicking them really hard… even when I retire will still be definitely sparring like this once a week… it’s my favorite part of training and always has been… can’t wait to dance with you boys again in a few months."

Harrison’s last appearance inside the circle came at ONE on Prime Video 1 in August 2022. Stepping into the co-main event for a shot at Nong-O Hama’s ONE bantamweight Muay Thai championship, Harrison suffered a first-round TKO after eating a devastating leg kick just two minutes into the first round.
