British Muay Thai star Liam Harrison has got some thoughts on the upcoming Openweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix that ONE Championship is hosting.
Announced earlier this year, the tournament is sure to produce dream matchups that fans never thought they would get to see.
With the contestants in the Grand Prix still yet to be announced, Harrison recently broke the silence by declaring that he would not be competing in it. Not one to turn down a fight, ‘The Hitman’ cited his recent injuries as his reasoning for stepping away.
The striking veteran has been sidelined by a knee injury since he challenged Nong-O Hama for the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title at ONE on Prime Video 1 in August.

In an interview with The MMA Superfan, Liam Harrison spoke about the tournament and how he believes the outcome will not be surprising, putting emphasis on the openweight format:
“What happens if a heavyweight guy goes in and maybe I don’t know let’s say maybe Joseph Lasiri, the champion at 56 kg, what if he goes in and he gets drawn with a heavyweight in round 1 what’s gonna happen?”
He added:
“I don’t care what anyone says, a good big one beats a good little one every single day of the week.”

Liam Harrison explains why he's not keen on joining Openweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix
With the competitors yet to be announced for ONE Championship’s upcoming openweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix, Liam Harrison is one fighter that has ruled himself out of the tournament.
Whilst ‘The Hitman’ is not one to shy away from a challenge, he knows that he needs to be smart about taking fights that make sense for him right now.
As one of the most exciting strikers on ONE Championship’s roster, fans would have gotten excited at the prospect of seeing Harrison take on some fighters he wouldn’t usually be targeting. However, that is not the case this time around.
After suffering a knee injury following his fight with ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world champion Nong-O Hama last year, Liam Harrison has had to train smart and give his body time to recover so that he can come back just as strong as he was before.
In the same interview, he spoke about the risks that the tournament presents that make it a dangerous proposition for him at this time.
He said:
“I know, just from my look, that I’d get some giant or Regian Eersel or someone like that in the first round. I’m just coming back from injury, I don’t wanna go into a tournament. I just got my body strong again, I got my body fresh, and then fight some giant, especially in four-ounce MMA gloves in the first round.”
