No.3-ranked women's bantamweight Mayra Bueno Silva went up against No.7-ranked Macy Chiasson on the main card of UFC 303 on Saturday, June 29.

After a solid first round, Chiasson clocked Silva with a vicious elbow in the second round, splitting open the latter's forehead above the right eye. The referee, Chris Tognoni, called in the cage-side doctor as blood oozed out of Silva's cut. After a close look, the physician decided that the cut was too deep – almost to the bone – and declared an end to the fight.

Silva was unhappy with the stoppage and wanted to continue the fight, which some fans found impressive given the state of the injury.

Having lost the fight via TKO (doctor's stoppage), Silva went straight to Dana White to talk about it but the UFC CEO did not seem too keen to get close to the fighter. He seemingly gestured to Silva to get the cut taken care of first.

MMA professionals and fans were shocked by the nature of the gash she sustained at UFC 303, but the opinion on the stoppage was divided.

Veteran journalists like Ariel Helwani and Amy Kaplan claimed that it was a timely call, while fighters like Eryk Anders and Brad Katona thought she should have been allowed to continue.

Helwani wrote on X:

"That's the right call. What an elbow from Chiasson."

Kaplan wrote:

"That was the right call, that was a NASTY cut #UFC303"

Anders wrote:

"They need to let those cuts ride. If the fighter wants to fight them then fight."

Fans were also of mixed opinions on the matter.

While Silva nurses her wounds, Chiasson is already eyeing a mega-fight against Kayla Harrison later this year. She told Aaron Bronsteter after the win that while she's happy to face anyone presented by the matchmakers, she believes Harrison stands in the way of a women's bantamweight title shot.
