Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson faced devastating news when his $14.5 million Malibu mansion was reduced to ashes during the recent L.A. wildfires. The 69-year-old learned about the destruction after returning from Austin, Texas, where he was recording a podcast episode with Joe Rogan.
The wildfires swept through Malibu, obliterating homes in their path, including Gibson’s cliffside property, where he had lived for 15 years. The actor described the scene as “complete devastation,” with entire structures, vehicles, and possessions reduced to rubble.
Over a dozen homes in his neighborhood were similarly destroyed, leaving only chimneys and scattered roof tiles behind. Gibson shed light on the incident during Thursday's News Nation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, stating:
“I was kind of ill at ease while we were talking because I knew my neighborhood was on fire, so I thought, ‘I wonder if my place is still there.' But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there. It’s just a thing but it’s obviously devastating. It’s emotional. You know, we have lived there for a long time. I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders." Gibson expressed gratitude for the survival of his family and even his chickens, which remarkably endured the inferno unharmed. He added:
“Everything from photographs to files to, you know, just personal things that I had from over the years, and clothing, and you know, cool stuff. But you know, hey, and that can all be replaced, these are only things, and the good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way. It was amazing. We checked the chicken coop and they were fine. So we gave them some grain and water and they are happy and laying eggs. They weren’t roast chickens.”
