Dvalishvili was last seen in action September this year when he defeated Sean O'Malley at UFC 306 to capture the bantamweight belt.
'The Machine' will now have his first title defense at UFC 311. He will take on Umar Nurmagomedov in the co-main event of the card, which will take place on Jan. 18 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
The card will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan.
How did Merab Dvalishvili vs. Umar Nurmagomedov become a reality?
For quite some time, Merab Dvalishvili and Umar Nurmagomedov had been going back and forth on social media. But no official announcement regarding a clash between the two had been made by the UFC.
On Dec. 5, UFC CEO Dana White uploaded a video where he made the fight official and also told the story about how it came to fruition:
"Merab came into the office late last night, told us he is tired of listening to Umar disrespect him and wanted to make this fight happen as soon as possible. We called Umar, he was sleeping in Dagestan. He said, 'Hell yes, anywhere and anytime.'"
