Mike Tyson explains his rationale for fighting Jake Paul at 58: “Who else can do that”

Mike Tyson is gearing up for his return to the boxing ring against Jake Paul despite suffering a serious health issue that delayed his return to the sport.

The boxing showdown has sparked divided opinions throughout the boxing community with many expressing concerns over the former undisputed heavyweight champion's health and safety considering the massive 31-year age gap between the two boxers.

However, Tyson was quick to respond when asked by Adam Catterall of talkSPORT about his motivation for fighting the YouTube star at this age. Here's what the boxing legend said:

"You know why we're here now? [At] 58, I'm going to fight in the biggest arena ever and it is going to be sold out, and who else can do that now?... I need, I have to perform. That gives me all the inspiration, let me know you better perform tonight. It's time to perform."

During the same interview, Tyson also shared details about his training regimen, revealing that he's been pushing through eight three-minute rounds to prepare for the upcoming fight with Jake Paul.

Mike Tyson set for first professional boxing match in 19 years in clash with Jake Paul

Mike Tyson dueled with Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition bout back in 2020. However, this will be his first professional boxing match since June 2005, when he retired from pro boxing following his loss to Kevin McBride.

The boxing legend’s last professional win came 21 years ago against Clifford Etienne in February 2003.

Meanwhile, Jake Paul has risen up the boxing ranks since making his professional debut in 2020. The YouTube sensation boasts a 10-1 pro record with his latest triumph coming over Mike Perry via sixth-round knockout in July 2024.

The duo are set to take on each other on Nov. 15, 2024, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and will be streamed live on Netflix.
