Reigning ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci considers himself a big nerd in every sense of the word. There’s certainly no denying that fact, especially when you take into consideration his life accomplishments.
One of them is being a multi-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion. The other is learning an entire foreign language just using Google Translate.
In a recent interview with ONE Championship, ‘Darth Rigatoni’ explained exactly how he was able to do it. Mikey Musumeci said:
“Being with Brazilians my whole life, I definitely wanted to learn so I could connect with them. Not being able to communicate or talk to them kind of sucks when you’re around them so much. I was on Instagram, and I kept getting messages from Brazilian fans and stuff. So I’ll just keep responding, and I’ll go to Google Translate and keep reading the things. And over time, I just memorized all the different things.”

“And I learned it, I would say, I learned Portuguese in about three years’ time doing that method. And then now I love it because I can connect with Brazilian people. I could connect, like, a whole time period. You feel like you can talk to them. It’s so cool. You’re able to communicate and make jokes with them. It’s really fun.”
Mikey Musumeci aims to continue growing culturally while he takes the Circle
Mikey Musumeci is set to defend his ONE flyweight submission grappling world title against IBJJF No Gi World Champion Osamah Almarwai at ONE Fight Night 10. The event takes place at the 1stBank Center in Colorado on May 5th.
After taking care of business against Almarwai, Musumeci plans to continue diversifying his linguistic capabilities.
“I want to keep this format of how I learn with different cultures. And I just want to keep growing and see how many things I can learn in my whole life span because my favorite thing about life is learning.”
ONE Fight Night 10 streams live and for free in the United States and Canada via Amazon Prime.
