After almost a year away, Covington returned to the octagon, having last fought against Leon Edwards at UFC 296, where he suffered a loss. At UFC Tampa on Dec. 14, he faced another brutal defeat. 'Chaos' sustained a cut on his eyelid in the first round, which Buckley targeted as the rounds progressed. The doctor ultimately stopped the bout at the last minute of the third round.

Muhammad took to X to tease 'Chaos' for his loss, referencing the incident where Covington was allegedly involved in an altercation with Jorge Masvidal at Papi Steak restaurant. The reigning welterweight champion mockingly suggested that Covington never recovered from that. He wrote:

Before the fight, the current welterweight champion predicted Buckley could put Covington to sleep and took shots at 'Chaos's' wrestling and striking skills.

Dana White questions Colby Covington’s doctor stoppage loss

Colby Covington suffered a cut on his right eye in the first round, and Joaquin Buckley made it worse in the following rounds, leaving blood all over the octagon. The physician inspected 'Chaos's' eye, and referee Dan Miragliotta awarded the victory to 'New Mansa' via doctor stoppage in the third round.

At the UFC Tampa post-event press conference, UFC CEO Dana White shared his thoughts on the doctor's stoppage, asserting if the fight had taken place in Vegas, it wouldn't have been stopped. He said:

"I was curious to see how it would go if it went five rounds if it went later in the rounds. You know, no doubt that was a bad cut, but the fight doesn't get stopped in Vegas. That fight keeps going in Vegas. 100%."
