ONE 164 results: Jarred Brooks dethrones Joshua Pacio in a five-round war to capture the ONE strawweight world title

In the ONE 164 main event, reigning strawweight world champion Joshua Pacio squared off against No.1-ranked contender Jarred Brooks. After what felt like an eternity of waiting, the two warriors finally stepped inside the circle at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.

Less than 20 seconds into the opening round, Brooks was able to get Pacio to the canvas. Sitting in Pacio’s guard, ‘The Monkey God’ was content to stay active on the ground, delivering strikes to the defending champion through the end of the round. Things weren’t as easy for Brooks in the second.

Unable to get Pacio to the ground despite multiple attempts, ‘The Monkey God’ was forced to stand and trade with his opponent. Both fighters did an excellent job of mixing up their strikes as they entered the third round. Brooks abandoned his takedown attempts in the middle round, opting to stand and trade with Pacio, but the champion remained largely defensive, giving Brooks the advantage heading into the championship rounds.

Brooks was finally able to secure a takedown with 90 seconds remaining in the fourth round. Quickly taking Pacio’s back, ‘The Monkey God’ fished for a rear-naked choke, but Pacio was able to survive and make it out of the round. In the final five minutes, both fighters stayed on their feet, but Pacio remained defensive, allowing Brooks to pull ahead on the scorecards.

With one minute to go, Jarred Brooks shot in and scored a takedown, keeping Pacio on his back for the remainder of the contest. With the full 25 minutes expiring, they went to the judges’ scorecards.

Jarred Brooks wants to share the circle with Demetrious Johnson following ONE 164

With the victory, Jarred Brooks improved to 4-0 inside the circle and 20-2 overall. ‘The Monkey God’ was overwhelmed with emotion following his win.

Speaking with ONE commentator Mitch Chilson inside the circle, Brooks shared his love and appreciation for his team, ONE Championship, and the gracious people of the Philippines:

“First thing I want to say is all respect to Joshua Pacio and Team Lakay. I know that I had some choice words, but I’m just trying to make this fight as well as anybody else is you know. I love the Filipino people. I have not met one bad person here. I love everybody and I really want to show my heart with the next fight.

“I know that I’ve been the heel a lot these last fights, but I’m a good person and I don’t want anybody to think that I’m not. I love all my Filipino people. I love all of you. You guys are so cool. I love this promotion. This is the best promotion in the world and I’ve been treated like royalty and with all due respect, this is way better than the UFC.”

As far as what comes next, Jarred Brooks is hoping for a champion vs. champion showdown with current flyweight king and pound-for-pound great, Demetrious Johnson:

“Whatever ONE wants to give me, I trust their matchmaking. Rick is a great matchmaker so I trust him, but I mean, I would love to fight Demetrious Johnson. That’s like a dream come true for me. Demetrious, I have the utmost respect for you. You’re the best ever. I would love to share the circle with you, lose or win."
