ONE Fight Night 26 results and recap: Thongpoon PK Saenchai vs Danial Williams

Kicking off a loaded ONE Fight Night 26 card on Friday night was a strawweight Muay Thai showdown between Thongpoon PK Saenchai and three-sport star Danial Williams.

Williams entered the bout two months removed from an impressive showing against Banma Duoji. Meanwhile, Thongpoon has had a rough go it lately, suffering back-to-back losses against Zakaria El Jamari and Rui Botelho.

Round 1: Both fighters start with leg kicks and Thongpoon fires a push kick up the middle. Thongpoon lands another leg kick, but Williams comes back with a right hand that backs up the Thai standout. Thongpoon keeps kicking away, but ‘Mini T’ is finding a home for his right hand, splitting Thongpoon’s guard and landing. Williams is picking up the aggressive and pressuring Thongpoon into the corner. Thongpoon circles away, and Williams lands another right hand down the center.

With seconds left in the round, Williams delivers a Superman elbow and eats a right hand on his way in. Both fighters start slinging leather in close until the bell sounds, bringing an end to the opening round.

Round 2: Williams comes out and picks up right where he left on, throwing a combination, but it’s Thongpoon who lands a nice right hand that busts open Williams and sends him to the mat. Williams pops back up, but it’s ruled a knockdown. Williams comes back out swinging, but Thongpoon catches him with another nasty right that puts him on the mat once again.

Williams answers the 10-count but re-engages in a firefight with Thongpoon and ultimately pays for it — getting dropped by another booming right hand that puts him down for the third and final time.

After putting ‘Mini T’ down three times in the second stanza, there was nothing but love and respect between the two warriors. Speaking with Mitch Chilson immediately following the fight, Thongpoon acknowledged that he took it slow in the first round to figure out Williams’ game plan and then make the necessary adjustments in the second.

With the win over Williams, Thongpoon now has five wins under the ONE Championship banner and 80 career victories in his combat sports career. He also banked a $50,000 bonus from ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong for his highlight-reel finish at ONE Fight Night 26.
