Japanese sensation Chihiro Sawada returned to the legendary Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday night, seeking her fourth-straight win under the promotional banner.

Standing in her way at ONE Fight Night 27 on Prime Video was Meng Bo, a 28-fight veteran out of China looking to land her sixth career victory in ONE. In her last outing, Meng came up short against Ayaka ‘Zombie’ Miura at ONE Fight Night 16. If she hopes to climb back into the win column, she’ll have to pass another tough test against the 8-0-1 Sawada.

Round 1: Sawada shoots in for a takedown almost immediately and works Meng into the corner. Meng manages to stay upright and shoves Sawada off before returning to the center of the ring. Sawada shoots in again, but Meng executes a perfect sprawl and staves off the takedown attempt. Sawada continues to stay relentless in her pursuit and shoots once again. This time, Sawada the body lock and drops down, looking for a single leg, but Meng’s defense is holding up spectacularly.

Sawada can’t muscle her down and opts to back away before re-engaging. Meng lands a nice elbow in close. Sawada lands a short right hand, and Meng responds with a calf kick. Sawada throws a right but eats a counter from Meng that connects cleanly. With just over 30 seconds in the round, Sawada shoots for another takedown but can’t get past the sprawl of Meng.

Meng lands a few blows to the body just before the round comes to a close.

Round 2: Sawada picks up right where she left off, throwing a right hand before shooting in for yet another takedown that Meng fends off. Meng catches Sawada with a right hand on the break. Sawada throws a hook before shooting for a single leg. She still can’t get Meng down, but Sawada seems content to try and pull Meng into her guard. Meng instinctively grabs the ropes which prompts referee Herb Dean to pause the bout and issue a yellow card to Meng.

Dean restarts the fighters in the same position. Sawada has Meng in her butterfly guard, but Meng promptly stands up and backs away. Back on her feet, Sawada goes right back to the takedown attempt and gets Meng on top of her. Sawada is desperately trying to keep Meng in her guard. Meng obliges and throws a few short elbows before settling into her opponent’s guard.

After a lack of activity, Dean stands up the fighter and they quickly re-engage with a grappling exchange that has both fighters cartwheeling back down to the mat where they’ll remain for the remainder of the round.

Round 3: More of the same in round three as Sawada attempts to impose her will on the mat, but Meng’s defense is just too good. Meng gets into side control. Sawada temporarily gives up her back in an attempt to get Meng back into her guard. She succeeds in doing so, but Meng’s size and strength appear to be too much for Sawada to overcome.

Meng drops a few solid shots on the mat before transitioning into half-guard. After another 90 seconds in the dominant position, Meng moves out of Sawada’s guard and gets back to her feet. That forces Sawada back upright. Meng keeps Sawada at bay for the remainder of the round with her striking and appears to be on her way to one of the biggest wins of her MMA career.
