ONE Fight Night 27 fight results: Denice Zamboanga vs Alyona Rassohyna

After working her way up the atomweight MMA rankings, Denice Zamboanga stepped into the spotlight at ONE Fight Night 27 on Prime Video with an opportunity to leave the legendary Lumpinee Stadium with the interim atomweight MMA world championship.

Standing in Zamboanga’s way of claiming the interim ONE atomweight MMA world title is Alyona Rassohyna — a Ukrainian grappling sensation making her first walk to the ring in more than three years.

Round 1: Zamboanga gets things started with a shot straight down the middle and Rassohyna fires back with a calf kick. Zamboanga lands a leg attack of her own, and Rassohyna gives her one right back. As Zamboanga starts to let her hands go, Rassohyna closes the distance and clinches up against the ropes. Rassohyna looks for her patented hip-top takedown, but Zamboanga sees it coming and pops the Ukrainia in the face with a short elbow. Zamboanga drags Rassohyna to the mat, but Rassohyna immediately starts fishing for an armbar that prompts Zamboanga to stand up and force Rassohyna back to her feet.

Rassohyna goes for a takedown once they’re upright, but Zamboanga sprawls and gets into side control with less than a minute to go in the round. Rassohyna locks up Zamboanga’s arm and looks for an inverted triangle, but there’s not enough time on the clock.

Round 2: Both fighters let their fists fly in the opening minute of the second stanza, but it’s not long before Rassohyna shoots in for another takedown when the pressure begins to mount. Zamboanga defends the attempt and ends up on top once again. Zamboanga looks to land some shots from the half-guard. Rassohyna accidentally lands an up-kick while Zamboanga is considered a downed opponent, but it only garners a quick warning from referee Herb Dean.

As the fight resumes, Rassohyna scrambles and starts digging for a leg lock near the ropes. Zamboanga defends and lands a couple of ground-and-pound shots. Rassohyna goes back to attacking the legs, but that allows Zamboanga to further transition to side control and briefly teases an armbar of her own. Rassohyna defends the hold but eats a host of elbows from the Filipina fan favorite.

With only seconds left in the round, Zamboanga unleashes a flurry of elbows that forces Dean to step in and call for the stoppage.

With the victory, Denice Zamboanga moved to 7-1 in ONE Championship. More importantly, she claims her first ONE world title, winning the interim atomweight MMA belt and setting the stage for a long-awaited clash with the division’s undisputed queen, Stamp Fairtex.

‘The Menace’ also banked a $50,000 performance bonus for her TKO victory courtesy of ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
